‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’, The Second Pic From James Gunn & Peter Safran’s DC Studios, Gets Summer 2026 Release
By Anthony D'Alessandro
Put it your calendar to wear your tights and capes on June 26, 2026 as the Warner Bros/DC Studios feature take of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will hit theaters.
The Craig Gillespie directed, Milly Alcock starring adaptation of Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Bilquis Evely illustrated, is the second feature title under the new DC Studios run by James Gunn and Peter Safran after the former’s Superman movie which hits theaters in July 11, 2025. Ana Nogueira adapted the comic book for the big screen.
Gunn said at a DC Studios presser early last year that in their Supergirl “we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore; she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
As Deadline first told you, House of the Dragon‘s Milly Alcock won the role of Supergirl, and she’ll appear in another DC project before making her big-screen debut as the Angel of the Sky.
The last time Warner Bros released a Supergirl movie was in 1984. It starred Helen Slater in the title role, Faye Dunaway as the villain and was directed by Jeannot Szwarc. The pic grossed $14M stateside.

‘Supergirl’ Movie Lands June 2026 Release in Theaters
In addition to dating the DC superhero pic, Warner also reveals release plans for 'Mortal Kombat 2' and Zach Cregger's 'Weapons,' among other titles.

DC Studios is wasting no time in setting a release date for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow now that the movie has found its director.
The high-profile movie will fly into cinemas on June 26, 2026, DC and Warner Bros. announced Tuesday. It is the second film to receive a release date since James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought in to overhaul DC under the new banner DC Studios. The first was Superman, which Gunn is currently shooting for a July 2025 release date.
Flimmaker Craig Gillespie was tapped by Gunn and Safran to shepherd Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon). She’ll play Superman’s Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. The feature is inspired by the Tom King and Bilquis Evely comic, and will depart from the earnest take on the character audiences have come to know on the CW Supergirl series.
The plan is for Supergirl to start shooting this fall, according to insiders. DC Studios also has the Batman movie feature in the works from director Andy Muschietti.
In addition to Supergirl, Warner Bros. announced a handful of other dates for some of its high-profile movies, including New Line’s Mortal Kombat 2, which will hit theaters on Oct. 24, 2025. New Line’s sci-fi thriller Companion will kick off the year and open on Jan. 10, 2025.
The pic is produced by Zach Cregger alongside Raphael Margules and J.D. Lifshitz of BoulderLight Pictures and Vertigo’s Roy Lee, with Drew Hancock directing. The maverick horror team is also behind the movie Weapons, which will open on Jan. 16, 2026. Cregger is directing that film.
Warners also announced the release date for the animated holiday pic Margie Claus, which is set to open on Nov. 5, 2027. Melissa McCarthy is voicing the title role and is producing alongside Ben Falcone and Pilar Flynn.

That is a piece of good news!
Let's hope the schedule sticks and doesn't get shuffled around too much. This will largely depend on how the new Superman film will fare in 2025. If it goes well, Supergirl will have a decent shot at hitting the target release date.
Having read the DC Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow omnibus (collection of all SG: WOT issues) recently, I can say that this interpretation will be very much different than the ones we've had on screen so far. The SG: WOT series was enjoyable in comic book format and I can only hope that it translates to the big screen equally well and that not too many creative liberties are taken to dilute the overall product.
In any event, it will be very interesting to see how the final product works out.
